For almost 100 years, the Bonnie Kate has welcomed generations through its doors. First dates. Family outings. Saturday matinees. Live performances. Community celebrations. More than a theater, it has been a place where memories are made and stories are told.
Founded by coal baroness Olivia Hoge Browning, the theater officially opened on July 4, 1927, with a sold-out audience eager to experience the magic of the silver screen. From that first performance to its final years as a neighborhood movie theater before closing in 2012, the Bonnie Kate reflected the changing landscape of American entertainment. It hosted nationally broadcasted radio shows, welcomed western stars, introduced innovative theater seating, and remained a beloved gathering place for generations of Elizabethton residents.
In 2016, the City acquired the Bonnie Kate with a bold vision, restore this beloved landmark and preserve it for future generations. Partnering with the Friends of the Bonnie Kate, restoration began with critical improvements including a new roof, HVAC system, sprinkler system, and windows.
The theater temporarily closed in 2024 for a complete auditorium renovation and reopened in July 2025 with a beautifully restored space. The restorations both honor its historic character while enhancing the audience experience. Improvements include new seating through the Leave a Legacy program, ADA accessibility, new curtains, updated restrooms, and a marquee inspired by the theater’s iconic 1940s design.
The story is still being written. A vertical marquee and upgraded cinema system are planned, while the Friends are planning a year-long celebration in 2027 to honor theater’s 100th anniversary. Be on the lookout for more details coming soon.
