Downtown Elizabethton welcomes a new local business to its growing community as Rhubarb Mercantile, a specialty grocery store located at 719 E. Elk Ave., officially celebrated its opening with a ribbon cutting.
Owner Meg Couch brings a thoughtfully curated selection of specialty grocery items to Rhubarb Mercantile, with a focus on hard-to-find ingredients that help food lovers enhance their favorite recipes and discover something new.
The shop also offers weekday sandwiches, local ice cream treats and chocolates sourced from across the South. Couch intentionally sources from immediately local and specialty vendors whenever possible, creating a business model centered around the idea that supporting small business means supporting small business.
“After a lengthy buildout period, I’m thrilled to officially join the Downtown Elizabethton business community,” said owner Meg Couch. “I’ve long dreamed of opening a specialty grocery store and couldn’t be happier that my opportunity arose in such a supportive environment for small businesses. I hope to become a reliable resource for local home cooks, and people who just love to eat!”
Main Street Elizabethton Director Courtney Bean said Rhubarb Mercantile is a perfect example of Downtown Elizabethton’s tag line, Old Soul, New Stories.
“Rhubarb Mercantile is such an incredible example of what we value here in our downtown, honoring our history while also creating new opportunities.” said Bean. “Meg and the entire Couch family have taken a historic downtown building and breathed new life into it, creating a beautifully preserved space while bringing an incredible new business to our downtown. Rhubarb Mercantile is going to be such a benefit to our daytime downtown community, giving people another place to grab lunch or a treat, while also serving all community members who are looking for fresh, local and thoughtfully sourced food. It’s exciting to see historic spaces continue to evolve and become home to businesses that bring something new and meaningful to our downtown”
The opening of Rhubarb Mercantile adds another unique destination to Downtown Elizabethton’s growing collection of locally owned businesses, giving residents and visitors another reason to shop, eat and spend time downtown.
