The City of Elizabethton, Main Street Elizabethton, and Tailored Hair Co invite the community to attend the dedication of the new City of Power mural by artist Jon Murrill. The event will take place on Monday, March 30 at 1:00 PM at Tailored Hair Co, 405 E Elk Avenue.
The mural highlights key moments in Elizabethton’s industrial history, including early water-powered mills, the Tweetsie Railroad, the development of hydroelectric power, and the legacy of women in the workforce and the rayon plants. Together, these elements showcase how industry shaped the city’s growth and continues to influence the community today.
“Main Street Elizabethton continues to focus on public art that reflects the heart of downtown, from our deep-rooted history to the mountainous beauty of Appalachia.,” said Courtney Bean, Main Street Elizabethton Director. “This mural beautifully captures the importance of our industrial history while honoring the people who powered it, especially the women who worked in the rayon plants. We see that same grit and determination today through the women leading businesses and shaping downtown’s next chapter. It’s truly a a powerful reflection of Old Soul, New Stories that makes our community so special.”
Community members are invited to attend the dedication and celebrate this newest addition to downtown public art. A special photo opportunity will also be held for female business owners to recognize and celebrate the important role women play in the local workforce and their lasting impact on the community.
This mural was managed by the City of Elizabethton and funded by the TN Arts Commission Rural Arts Project Support grant, Main Street Elizabethton, and Tailored Hair Co.
